ii - V - I chord substitutions

This one is fairly straightforward. Below is a chart of ii V i substitutions (alternatives to the standard progression) that I have used in the various arrangements thus far. This is is not an exhaustive list. It could well go into many pages more and I will add to this in the next few months. On the chart I have named some of them. A more detailed description of what these mean will be posted in due course. * I have also included audio examples. (As an aside - I found this a great practice. Taking this through the keys with the correct voice leading is no easy task and will give me material to work on for several weeks.) * In the recent update of this post I have taken the labels out to avoid clutter. I will take a closer look at some of the techniques used here at a later point. Audio example

Misty - Final Version

Sometimes taking a break can be quite a nuisance, at other times the lack of output can provide the needed silence to fix glaring mistakes once you return back to the work. I hadn't worked on this arrangement in about 9 months. I was always fond of it, but when I played it through yesterday a couple of parts really didn't sit right at all. All it needed was an hour however, and things were fixed and now I am quite happy. Playing it through with the band this morning cemented it, and it felt close to a final edit. I have not had time to record the audio yet, but will do shortly. For now, here are the chords:

Firstly, my aim here is to provide resources for musicians of any level to play popular jazz standards in a new way. This could be either because they are looking for something fresh and new for a particular gig or recording, or that they would like to go deeper into the tunes they play regularly, and see what kinds of musical ideas are possible. Several posts focus on the mechanics of arranging a standard. So far I have covered beginner to intermediate techniques but I plan in future to look at more advanced ideas. I would like the blog to be a resource for other sites and content that focus on similar ideas. I have begun to post on this topic. Eventually I would like other composers and arrangers to contribute their music so that we can have a forum to share this kind of work, and to discuss techniques and ideas.
