Watermelon Man

I've been wanting to rearrange this iconic piece by Herbie Hancock for quite sometime, but the ideas never came. This is still work in progress, but I'm happy with the feel and idea behind it. Anyone familiar with this blog will recognise my style harmonically so I've tried to fit the piece into my line of thinking without taking it away from the original. Unlike most of my pieces here, rather than taking away chords I've added some, so I had to be careful.

The intro and outro have a kind of double time feeling, with a pedal in the highest note. The idea was to create movement so that when the melody came, that the time feel felt like it was slowing down to something more relaxed; even though the chords are somewhat more complex than the original. Overall I wanted the piece to have a laid back feel, while keeping the call for "Watermelon Man" in the background.

I've attached a demo and a score will be available soon.

*Note that in the future this is unlikely to be a Bossa Nova feel. It was just the closest backing I had available for the time being.
